How BlueScope eliminated 75 spreadsheets and accelerated Finance with OneStream

About this video

BlueScope, an Australian-based global steel manufacturer, moved to OneStream when HFM's development roadmap made staying put an untenable long-term decision. The evaluation process quickly revealed that OneStream's extensibility, innovation investment, and commitment to customer success set it apart from the alternatives.

In just the first North American implementation, BlueScope eliminated approximately 75 spreadsheets and gained the ability to maintain a higher-level chart of accounts while giving each business unit the layered drill-down detail it needs for planning. With no dense restructures to worry about and a customer success team that picks up the phone, Gene Halbrooks' verdict is straightforward: OneStream makes his life easier.

Key takeaways

  1. HFM's fading development roadmap forced BlueScope to evaluate what came next, and OneStream stood out immediately. The depth of R&D investment and the pace of innovation were key factors that gave BlueScope confidence in OneStream as a long-term platform.
  2. OneStream's 100% commitment to customer success was the deciding factor for BlueScope's Finance systems team. The ability to call and reach a customer success manager who figures it out is, in Gene Halbrooks' words, the reason he chooses OneStream.
  3. Extensible dimensionality gave BlueScope a higher-level chart of accounts with granular drill-down for each business unit. Each individual business gets the layering it needs for detailed planning without compromising the consolidated view leadership requires.
  4. Approximately 75 spreadsheets were eliminated within the first North American business implementation alone. That reduction in manual overhead reflects the broader opportunity BlueScope sees as it continues rolling OneStream out across the organization.
  5. No dense restructures means Finance teams make changes in minutes without worrying about downstream system impacts. That operational freedom, combined with faster data ingestion and extraction, has made OneStream a platform the team is genuinely excited to grow with.

My name is Gene Halbrooks. I'm the OneStream admin or manager of financial systems at BlueScope. BlueScope is an Australian-based company. They're a global manufacturer of steel. Prior to OneStream, we were on HFM. That development in HFM was going away, so we were faced with, hey, what do we want to do? We looked at OneStream.

Some of the highlights that really drew us into OneStream for a couple reasons. The amount of research and development that's going into the future of the product, the opportunities are endless. Their commitment to customer success is amazing.

You pick up the phone, you call OneStream, they get their customer success managers on the phone, and they figure it out. To me, that's key. Their 100% commitment to customer success is why I choose OneStream.

The extensibility of OneStream is something we are using here in the North America. It's really given us the ability to have a higher-level chart of accounts and then also giving each individual business the layering that they need to drill down deeper into the level of planning that they're needing to produce.

Some of the benefits that we've seen already in just a short time since the implementation is the speed of pulling data out, the ability to get data in, the endless possibilities that exist within OneStream for growing the business, reduced approximately 75 spreadsheets just within the first business we implemented here on the North America side.

There's no dense restructures. And you do a minute to change, you don't have to worry about if it's going to kick off the dense restructure. We're really excited about being a part of this OneStream journey.

There's so much innovation coming out of OneStream. My favorite thing about OneStream, I'll say it again, it makes my life easier. OneStream.
